The Amazon Bioeconomy Meets EU Rules

From 30 December 2026, Brazilian beef, soy and timber sold in the EU must prove they are deforestation-free. Here is what that takes.
The rule

EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR)

Operators placing cattle, soy, wood, cocoa, coffee, palm oil and rubber (and products like leather and furniture) on the EU market must prove they come from land not deforested recently.

The proof

Every plot, on the map

Exporters must supply the geolocation of each plot where the commodity was produced, with full polygon boundaries for plots larger than 4 hectares.

Brazil's risk tier

"Standard risk" means more checks

The EU rates Brazil standard risk. EU authorities must check 3% of operators sourcing from standard-risk countries, vs 1% for low risk.

A carbon credit for clean fuel

Each CBIO represents 1 tonne of CO2 avoided by biofuels such as cane ethanol. Fuel distributors must retire them; the 2026 national target is 48.09 million CBIOs.

Winning the market

Traceability becomes a selling point

Producers who can show plot-level, deforestation-free supply chains keep access to EU buyers; those who cannot face lost contracts as EU checks begin.
