USA Sky Events Calendar 2026–2027: Meteor Showers, Auroras & Celestial Highlights

Your Complete Guide to USA Sky Events in 2026–2027

From meteor showers and lunar eclipses to planetary conjunctions and solar maximum auroras, 2026 and 2027 deliver an extraordinary sequence of sky events for stargazers across the United States. Bookmark this calendar and set your alerts — the night sky is putting on its best show in years.

October–December 2026: The Fall Sky Events

Orionid Meteor Shower — Peak October 21–22, 2026

The Orionids are debris from Halley’s Comet, producing 10–20 meteors per hour at peak from the constellation Orion. Best viewed after midnight from any dark-sky location. The shower is active October 2–November 7, with the nights of October 21–22 delivering maximum activity.

Leonid Meteor Shower — Peak November 17–18, 2026

The Leonids originate from comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle and typically produce 10–15 meteors per hour. In exceptional storm years they have produced thousands per hour, though 2026 is expected to be a standard year. Notable for extremely fast meteors (44 miles per second) often leaving persistent glowing trains.

Geminid Meteor Shower — Peak December 13–14, 2026

The year’s best meteor shower by far. Up to 150 meteors per hour under dark skies, multicolored fireballs, and favorable 2026 moon conditions make this the must-see sky event of the year. Read our complete Geminid 2026 guide for full viewing details.

Winter Solstice — December 21, 2026

The shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere. The winter solstice traditionally marks the beginning of the best nighttime viewing season — long, cold, clear nights ideal for deep-sky observation and aurora watching.

January–June 2027: The New Year Sky Events

Quadrantid Meteor Shower — Peak January 3–4, 2027

An underappreciated gem — the Quadrantids can rival the Geminids in peak intensity (up to 120 meteors/hour) but have a frustratingly narrow 6-hour peak window. Miss the peak and you see a normal shower; hit it right and you witness a spectacle. Read our Quadrantid 2027 web story guide for planning tips.

Spring Equinox — March 20, 2027

The March equinox is historically one of the best periods for aurora activity. Earth’s magnetic field alignment during the equinoxes increases the effectiveness of solar wind coupling, leading to more frequent and intense geomagnetic storms — and better auroras across the USA.

Lyrid Meteor Shower — Peak April 22–23, 2027

One of the oldest recorded meteor showers in history (documented since 687 BC), the Lyrids produce 10–20 meteors per hour from the debris of Comet C/1861 G1 Thatcher. Occasional outburst years can produce 100+ per hour, though this cannot be predicted far in advance.

Eta Aquarid Meteor Shower — Peak May 5–6, 2027

Another product of Halley’s Comet, the Eta Aquarids favor Southern Hemisphere viewers but still produce 10–30 meteors per hour from US latitudes. Notable for long, glowing trails and high speed (44 miles per second). Best observed in the pre-dawn hours.

Aurora Forecast: Solar Maximum Through 2026

Separate from the scheduled meteor showers, the ongoing Solar Cycle 25 maximum continues to produce G1–G5 geomagnetic storms throughout 2026. These are not predictable months in advance, but setting up NOAA Space Weather alerts means you’ll receive 1–3 day warnings when significant aurora events are incoming.
