Solar Maximum 2026: Why Aurora Storms Are Hitting the USA More Often

We are at the sun's most active period in 20 years. Here's the science behind why geomagnetic storms — and aurora — are becoming more frequent and intense.

Solar activity follows an 11-year cycle between solar minimum (quiet) and solar maximum (active). Solar Cycle 25 peaked in late 2024 and remains highly active through 2026 — the strongest cycle since Cycle 23 in 2000.

Coronal Mass Ejections: The Sun's Plasma Bombs

CMEs are massive eruptions of plasma from the sun's corona. When one hits Earth's magnetic field 1–3 days after ejection, it creates a geomagnetic storm — the power source for aurora. During solar maximum, the sun can release 3–4 CMEs per day. Most miss Earth, but when one connects, the result can be spectacular.

On May 10–12, 2024, a G5 (Kp 9) storm — the most powerful in two decades — lit up aurora across the entire contiguous United States. Millions of Americans saw northern lights from Texas, Florida, and California for the first time in their lives.

Solar Storms Also Threaten GPS, Radio & Power Grids

While aurora is beautiful, extreme solar storms can disrupt GPS signals, high-frequency radio communications, and satellite operations — and in worst cases, induce currents that damage power transformers. NOAA forecasters and utility companies coordinate during G3+ storms to protect critical infrastructure.

More Strong Storms Are Coming — Be Ready

NOAA expects 2–3 more G3+ storm events (Kp 7+) through 2026, keeping aurora visible across the northern and central United States multiple times this year. Solar activity will remain elevated through 2026 before beginning to decline in Solar Cycle 25's descending phase. Track Live Kp Index →
