Solar maximum means more aurora than at any time in the past decade. Here's everything you need to know to catch the northern lights from American soil.
The sun's 11-year activity cycle is at its peak. More sunspots = more coronal mass ejections (CMEs) = more geomagnetic storms = more aurora. The May 2024 Kp 9 storm was visible in Florida. Expect more in 2026.
Green — oxygen at 60–150 miles altitude (most common)
Red — oxygen at 200+ miles (rare, seen during G4–G5 storms)
Purple/Blue — nitrogen molecules at outer edges of aurora
Pink — mixed oxygen/nitrogen at lower altitudes during intense storms
Set up NOAA Space Weather alerts at swpc.noaa.gov for email/SMS warnings when geomagnetic storms are forecast.
